Help Me Hayley: Broken furnace making cold weather extra unbearable for Spokane boy

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Winter for many kids means snowball fights and sledding, but for one little North Spokane boy, all it means is pain. He has cerebral palsy, and the low temps cause his muscles to tighten and ache. With the family's furnace busted, their friends said "Help us Hayley."

"It hurts my heart," said his mother Richelle Tatosky, "He's been through so much. He wasn't supposed to survive."

Ten-year-old Kenzie was born at 23 weeks. Every single day, he defies the odds.

"They told him he wouldn't make the hour" Richelle said.

But now, he's thriving. He loves his dogs, his family and Thomas the Train. What he hates is winter.

"If you've ever had a muscle cramp, imagine your whole body like that," she said.

The cold causes unbearable tension in Kenzie's muscles. Their busted furnace has the family extremely worried for his well-being.

"We were told (the furnace) is about 24-years-old," she said. "They told us it's no longer safe to run it."

They are relying on space heaters and extra layers. That doesn't always work.

"I see the cold, to the point where I come in and his toes are bluish," she said. "I put him to bed in double socks, but he takes them off."

They turned to friends for advice, and those friends turned to Hayley.

"I wouldn't have done it myself," Richelle said. "I've worked so hard to get to where I am, I don't ask for handouts.

But she is hoping for a miracle, for her miracle.

"It's a basic need and I can't provide that right now," Richelle said. "It kills me."
