Here's a list of the stores staying closed on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday

Posted: Updated:

KHQ.COM - With more and more shoppers opting for online shopping every year, Black Friday and the Thanksgiving Day rush to beat everyone to the box stores to grab up exclusive steals and deals are becoming the less popular options, not just for consumers, but for brick-and-mortar stores too.

It was a decision first made by specialty outdoor retailer, REI. Back in 2015, the retailer made the decision not to give in to retail competition, shutting their doors to Black Friday shoppers and even challenging their customers to opt-out of the consumer chaos and instead get outdoors and do something.

Experts say closing on Thanksgiving (and Black Friday) has given some retailers a customer loyalty boost by signaling a commitment to family values. IKEA, for example, saying they remain closed on Thanksgiving for that exact reason, announcing, "we want our 14,000 co-workers across the U.S. to be able to enjoy the day celebrating with family and friends.”

Well now, the list of retailers following suit, is growing. While many stores will still be open on Black Friday, the list of stores staying closed on Thanksgiving is growing. Some of the biggest names include Home Depot, Nordstrom, Staples, Sam’s Club, Costco and Lowe’s but there are dozens more participating as well and BestBlackFriday.com is keeping a running list of closures.
