Ohio boy who gave up Xbox for blankets gets special surprise

Posted: Updated:
BEACHWOOD, Ohio -

A 9-year-old boy in a Cleveland suburb is getting in the holiday spirit by paying it forward to the less fortunate in his community, and the community is taking notice of his selfless act.

Mikah Frye, of Beachwood, Ohio, was with his grandma, Terry Brant, when he noticed homeless people outside in the cold and wanted to do something to help.

"He said, 'you can buy them a blanket,' and I said 'do you want to give up one Christmas gift to get a blanket to give to someone:' And he said okay and when he got home, he later said if the XBox is $300, and the blankets are $10 then I can buy 30 blankets,” Brant told WJW in Cleveland earlier this month.

Employees at a Microsoft store in Beachwood heard of Mikah's act of kindness and rewarded him on Saturday. They led him to the back of the store where Santa was waiting to give Mikah a bag full of gifts, including an Xbox.

Brant says Mikah's parents fell on hard times a few years back and lost their home, so Mikah knows what it's like to stay at an emergency shelter. Now that same shelter that helped Mikah and his family are helping to distribute the blankets, with a special note from Mikah attached to each one.

Brent calls the actions of the community a blessing.
