Good Samaritan helps woman after stray barrel of deicer destroys her jeep

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

An unsecured 50 gallon barrel of de-icer flew off a flatbed truck along Appleway Monday night. It hit a passing car, causing extensive damage to part of the vehicle.

The woman who was driving the car that was hit said because the other driver took off, paying the deductible falls on her.

“I’m working a minimum wage job and insurance is asking for a $500,” April Vail said. “ I don't have that kind of money. I’ve seen your help me Hayley posts. I thought this was a great scenario for it, and maybe  you could help.”

And even though all April wanted was helping finding the driver responsible for damaging her vehicle, instead, a stranger named Phil Shuearek found her. He saw KHQ’s story Tuesday night and reached out to Hayley Guenthner immediately.

“Being a mom, I’m sure it's difficult on her,” he said “I just want to help her out.”

He not only covered her deductible but also made sure Ariel and her daughter can have a Merry Christmas.

“There are good people out there and this proves it,” she said.

What's the first thing you would do if you had a pet translator and you could understand your dog or cat? I'd probably immediately let my cat know how sorry I am for stepping on her tail all those times. Recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning suggest the dream of communicating with your pets could become a reality.
