This year's state elections could shape future for Congress

Posted: Updated:
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -

Democrats will renew their battle to wrest control of Congress from Republicans this year, but the contests with the greatest long-term consequences could be elsewhere on the ballot.

The outcome of races for governor and state legislative seats will shape the boundaries of congressional districts for the decade to come.

Voters in two-thirds of the states will be electing governors to four-year terms in 2018. Of those, 26 will be vested with the power to approve or reject congressional maps that will be redrawn after the 2020 Census.

About 760 state legislative seats will be up for election for four-year terms, ensuring the winners will play a role in approving congressional maps.

Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, called 2018 "enormously consequential for redistricting."

PULLMAN, Wash. - Six-year-old Denny Curran should be enjoying his last few days of summer before first grade. He should be teasing his brother, splashing in the pool, giving his parents a hard time about vegetables. Instead, Denny is dead, the victim of a horrific, freak bicycle accident that could happen to your child too. "Denny was an extraordinary child," his father Keith Curran told KHQ.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police say they saw a dramatic increase in drug related calls on Tuesday. Police say at least one person has died and officers responded to almost 20 other calls of people acting erratically. Police are looking into whether there is a drug on the street that is "creating adverse health effects." Reported behavior is consistent with a stimulant, causing people to hallucinate and act in an unpredictable and sometimes violent manner.

SPOKANE, Wash. - The skies above Eastern Washington lakes and rivers have been a little busier these days. With wildfire season raging on, emergency crews have relied on air attacks from planes that scoop water. They're called fire bosses and you won't want to be in between them and the water when a fire is nearby. "It's extremely dangerous and they are an emergency vehicle," said Howard Platter of Newman Lake.
