Hundreds sickened after eating at 2 restaurants

Posted: Updated:

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department says it is investigating a possible norovirus outbreak at a restaurant with locations in Tacoma and University Place.

Health officials said Wednesday that more than 200 people reported getting sick after eating at the El Toro Restaurant in University Place. The restaurant closed Wednesday for cleaning and sanitizing.

KOMO-TV reports that closure comes after the Health Department closed the El Toro in Tacoma Tuesday. Health officials say there may be over 230 norovirus cases tied to that location. Health officials say the chips and salsa at the Tacoma location could have been tied to the illnesses. That restaurant has since reopened.

Health investigators are still trying to figure out how customers were exposed in University Place. Officials say it's unclear if the outbreaks are connected.

The television station said restaurant officials declined to comment.
