SEATTLE (AP) - A measure that requires drug manufacturers to pay for the disposal of unwanted medication passed the Washington state House, part of an effort by lawmakers to combat opioid abuse that kills more than a 1,000 of the state's residents every year.

House Bill 1047 was approved Friday despite opposition from representatives that said they worried the move would increase drug prices. It now moves to the Senate for consideration.

More than 52,000 people died in the U.S. in 2015 as a result of drug overdose, an 11 percent increase from a year earlier and almost the equivalent to the number of deaths due to firearms and homicide combined, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.
