Zinke defends hiking park fees amid travel spending flap

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has bristled under questioning by Democrats about his spending on travel as the Trump administration seeks deep cuts to conservation programs and fee increases at national parks.

Zinke testified about the White House's proposed 2019 budget before a Senate committee Tuesday. The former Navy SEAL flashed with anger when Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington pressed him on whether he could justify hiking park entry fees after spending taxpayer money on private jet flights.

Zinke said he resented the senator's question, which he called insulting and misleading. He said the three flights he took on private planes were all on aircraft driven by propellers, not jet engines.

Zinke has proposed sharply hiking entry fees during peak seasons at some of the nation's most popular national parks.

I'm more of a dog person, but if there is a place that is willing to pay me to live on an island in Greece and take care of cats, I'll become a feline fanatic.  Well, there is someone offering such a job right now and they claim it's a real opening.  God's Little People Cat Rescue posted on Facebook that they are looking for someone who can look after 55 cats on a little Greek island paradise called Syros.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Air quality in the Spokane area remains at an unhealthy level as of Tuesday night. Officials with the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency say they are using a series of filters and other tools to measure the air quality index. "What that means is we have a network of strategically placed monitors that are going to capture what the ambient levels are for our entire air shed," said Lisa Woodard.
