Thieves target bicycle parked outside of Spokane hospital

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

A man visiting his sick aunt at the hospital finds his bicycle stripped. Thieves preyed on him as he parked it just feet from an entrance at Holy Family.

"It stings," Justin Santiago said.

Santiago said it's been just a rough stretch for his entire family.

"(My aunt) has been really sick," he said.

His beloved aunt has chromes disease, pneumonia and recently had a stroke as well. Justin used his bicycle to visit her.

"I parked it right in the front and locked it up like I normally do," he said.

But the lock was no match for some low crooks.

"My heart just sank," he said. "I thought, this can't be happening right now."

Both the seat and the post were gone. The front tire was nearly removed.

"Someone must have spooked them," he said. "I just thought, why me? Why today?"

Justin's family said "Help Me Hayley" and she wasted no time sharing his story with the Bike Hub in downtown Spokane.

"When we heard about this, it got to us," said Tim Dunn with the Bike Hub. "We did whatever we could to help out a bit."

They replaced the parts needed to fix both Justin's bike and his outlook on our community.

"I feel really blessed right now," he said.
