Burglary suspect captured by K9 Khan after lengthy search

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -

K9 Khan and Deputy Kullman located a burglary suspect who fled on foot after he entered a barn and assaulted the owner when he was confronted.  Several agencies assisted during the search for the suspect.

On the afternoon of April 20, 2018, several Spokane County Deputies and Air 1, assisted by members of the Washington State Patrol, Stevens County Sheriff’s Office, Chewelah Police Department and other agencies, responded to a reported burglary call in the 40800 block of N. Short Road in North Spokane County.  A homeowner found the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Casey L. Brown, hiding in his barn.  When the homeowner confronted Brown, Brown struck him and fled on foot.

Chewelah Officer Matt Miller and his K9 partner Rebel and Deputy Tyler Kullman and K9 Khan responded to the scene in addition to several deputies and additional law enforcement agencies.  Air 1 was also called out to assist due to the large rural area.

When Brown hadn’t been located nearly three hours later, Deputy Kullman and K9 Khan began working back toward their patrol vehicle when K9 Khan suddenly put his nose to the ground and started pulling on his lead.  Approximately 100 yards later, K9 Khan behavior changed again, leading Deputy Kullman to believe Brown was near.  As Deputy Kullman scanned ahead, he observed Brown running through the woods. Deputy Kullman immediately gave a K9 warning, advising K9 Khan would be used to capture Brown if he didn’t stop and surrender.  Brown stopped and said, “I give up”, and laid on the ground.  Brown was taken into custody without further incident.

Brown was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for Burglary 1st Degree, Assault 4th Degree, Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Law Enforcement.

The homeowner received minor injuries as a result of Brown’s assault.

SPOKANE, Wash. - From the outside, the Repeat Boutique looks like a lot of other thrift shops in Spokane.  Inside, some might describe the stuff for sale as old, used, discarded garbage -- but store manager CJ Curtis sees its potential. And just like the goods in her shop, CJ is on her way to a new life, one far from the one she once lived.
