CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Boy survives after getting held underwater for 9 minutes in lazy river

Posted: Updated:

KHQ.COM - New surveillance video is an important reminder for kids and parents about water safety after a young boy got stuck in the suction pipe of a lazy river and was held under water for 9 minutes.

The incident happened back in March at a resort near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In the video you can see two boys playing in a resort pool when one of the boys appears to pry open a safety grate. The 12-year-old is seen diving into the pool to get a closer look at the suction pipe, but then his leg gets stuck.

An off-duty corrections officer, Shaun Skursky raced in to help and his quick thinking likely saved the boy's life. Skursky says he knew the boy had been under water too long and knew he needed oxygen so he dove under water and continued to breathe in the boy's mouth until extra help arrived.

Eventually maintenance workers shut off the power to the drain. Emergency medical technicians were then able to free the boy and get him to the side of the pool.

A north Myrtle Beach spokesperson says the boy has been released from the hospital and is back home.

SPOKANE, Wash. - From the outside, the Repeat Boutique looks like a lot of other thrift shops in Spokane.  Inside, some might describe the stuff for sale as old, used, discarded garbage -- but store manager CJ Curtis sees its potential. And just like the goods in her shop, CJ is on her way to a new life, one far from the one she once lived.
