Money scattered across Indiana highway after armored truck's door flings open

Posted: Updated:
INDIANAPOLIS -

Drivers on an Indiana interstate saw something this week that you usually just dream about: Money flying across the highway.

Traffic stopped when the door came loose on a Brink's armored truck traveling on Interstate 70 in Indianapolis.

When that happened money started flying out of the truck and some drivers were only too happy to help clean it up. Police say as much as $100,000 may be missing.

Troopers at the scene initially said up to $600,000 had flown across the interstate, but police later said the exact amount was not known. Troopers say people were jumping over fences from the adjacent neighborhood to stuff their pockets with money.

Police said taking money from the scene is considered theft.

In particular, police say they are looking for a school bus driver who stopped to grab cash before driving the bus away from the scene.  They are also looking for four individuals in a white pickup truck, pulling a utility trailer, who made off with one of the bags of money.

Police do say there were some honest people who gave the money back to the Brink's driver.
