Spokane Valley deputies arrest driver; seize drugs, cash and car

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Spokane Valley deputies arrested a man and seized drugs, cash, scales and his car following a traffic stop just after midnight on Sunday.

Around 12:30 a.m. on May 20, Deputy Thomas Walton checked the license plate of the car in front of him while patrolling N. Argonne. The return on the Acura's license plate showed the registered owner, 37-year-old Ryan J. Wheeler, had a felony warrant for his arrest.

Walton conducted a traffic stop and spoke with the driver who identified himself as Wheeler. The warrant was confirmed and Wheeler was told he was under arrest. As he got out of the car, Deputy Walton saw a clear plastic baggie containing a dark substance on the floor of the driver's seat he thought to be heroin.

During a search, the deputy found a pipe used to smoke controlled substances and $736 in cash in Wheeler's pockets. Deputy Walton believed there may be more drugs in his car and Wheeler consented to a search, saying, "I got something in the car." He went on to admit to having almost an ounce of heroin in his car.

A search of the car found heroin and methamphetamine in the car. Digital scales and several pills thought to be Hydrocodone were also found.

Wheeler was read his rights and he admitted that he was addicted to heroin and sold it to support his addiction. The drugs, paraphernalia, cash, and the 2000 Acura were seized. Wheeler was booked into the Spokane County Jail for possession charges and the outstanding warrant.

Deputies say the investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible in the future.
