California K9 busts driver with 60 pounds of meth

WEST COVINA, Calif. -

Last week, The West Covina Police Department's newest K9 officer made his first big  drug bust.

During a traffic stop near Vincent Ave and Interstate 10 in West Covina, California,  officers found methamphetamine under the driver's seat of the vehicle. The driver was detained and a narcotics detection K9 was called to the scene.

The K9 alerted on the vehicle leading officers to believe there were more drugs inside.

The vehicle was impounded and brought back to the police station where more methamphetamine was found in two hidden compartments, one under the driver's seat and one under the front passenger seat. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Pedro Lopez was arrested and booked for possessing methamphetamine for sale and transporting narcotics in a hidden compartment. Bail was set at $1 million.

The total weight f the drugs was about 60 lbs. K9 Rye is the department's newest K9, and was field certified in narcotic detection in April 2018. This was Rye's first bust since being field certified.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that a warrant for 76-year-old Douglas Ferguson couldn’t be served until Tuesday because of the severity of his injuries.
