Registered sex offender arrested after miles-long pursuit through Moses Lake

Posted: Updated:
GRANT COUNTY, Wash. -

Wednesday morning, law enforcement arrested a registered sex offender after he sent them on a lengthy pursuit through parts of Moses Lake.

According to the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Greg Hutchinson, the deputy in charge of tracking registered sex offenders, went looking for 53-year-old Gerald Johnston after he moved and neglected to update his address in the registry.

Deputies tracked Johnston to a home near Road 4 and L-Northeast. When they tried to talk to him, deputies say Johnston jumped back into his car and drove away. Deputies then called for backup. Moses Lake Police and Washington State Patrol joined in on the several miles-long chase around Moses Lake. Law enforcement called off the chase when Johnston entered areas of the city where a pursuit would put the public at too great of risk.

Johnston was found a short time later near East Terrace Ave. and South Grand Dr. He was arrested and booked into the Grant County Jail on multiple charges.

“Keeping track of registered sex offenders is one of the many duties of the sheriff’s office,” said Sheriff Tom Jones in a news release. “It’s one of the several ways we help keep our communities remain safe.”
