Woman robs grandma days after getting out of jail

SPOKANE, Wash. -

In January 2018, 22-year-old Ladarion Roberts was booked into the Spokane County Jail for robbery 1st degree, burglary 1st degree, and resisting arrest. Those charges came after she walked into a store picked up several items including a prepaid cell phone and then walked out without paying. She became combative and ran off but later was tracked down by a police K-9 she only served 60 days in jail. Even when prosecutors wanted the maximum sentences.

Spokane County Prosecutor Larry Haskell says we see this more frequently "We certainly see it more frequently than I like but as a percentage of a total population of the prosecutions that we have it's still a fair minority of those prosecutions that are people that are chronic offenders," said Spokane County Prosecutor Larry Haskell.

Roberts was facing years behind bars but thanks to the first time offender program, the judge gave her a one time deal a first-time offender waiver. Which lets the courts waive the imposition of a sentence within the standard sentence range and impose a sentence which may include up to 90 days behind bars. In this case, Roberts only got 60 days, and it didn't take long for her to end up back behind bars.

Haskell says there are many programs the county offers to those repeat offenders to help them From diversion programs, drug treatment programs, mental health programs and many more. But ultimately it's up to the person committing the crimes to clean up their act  "At some point and time it gets down to individual choices and personal accountability the system is getting better and better at addressing individual needs. But at some point and time we are limited with the tools that we have," Haskell added.

Ladarion Roberts is currently in the Spokane County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
