Whisper Oak Kennel hit by storm of anger on social media

Posted: Updated:
MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. -

After a Facebook post about a golden retriever named Chloe that was kenneled at Whisper Oak Kennel went viral, KHQ decided to investigate. Through a public records request, KHQ obtained documents about Whisper Oak Kennel, and from what we have learned-- the Whisper Oak has a clean record.

Thousands of people were outraged by the post. The Facebook post has been shared over 19,000 times on Facebook with over 2.3 thousand comments. Most of the comments were negative, and some of them were from people as far away as Massachusetts who have never had an experience at Whisper Oak.

One Yelp user, Michelle M. who hails from Massachusetts, said: " They kill animals! They don't feed them food or water. I'm am very devastated by the dog's death that was on FB after being picked up from here she was a mess and kidney failure and died. Shut this place down."

But what's the real story? We reached out to the owner of the dog, who didn't respond before our story aired, but told us later Friday evening that she cannot comment until the investigation by SCRAPS is complete, but that she would be willing to speak once it's over.

Through the public information request, KHQ found that there was only one complaint against Whisper Oaks in 2011 which stated that the animals were not being taken care of and the smell was overwhelming. But when SCRAPS went to check it out for themselves, the kennel was clean.

In 2012 the kennel closed citing the economy, and it was closed for three years until September of 2015 when it re-opened its doors. And in February 2018, during the annual inspection by SCRAPS, they found the kennel was clean with no odors, and the dogs were provided with beds and blankets. There were no violations, and it meets requirements.
