Suspect hiding from Pierce County Deputies and their K9, Dan, finds out the attic wasn't the best spot

Posted: Updated:
PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. -

A man running from Pierce County deputies this week decided an attic would be a good place to hide, however, the attic gave way.

Deputies from the Pierce County Gang Unit, along with a K9 assisted the Department of Corrections in locating a gang member from California with an active warrant for an armed robbery probation violation. Due to his past convictions, the fugitive was classified as armed and dangerous and a high violent offender.

Deputies arrived at a house in Spanaway where they believed the fugitive was hiding. They heard a loud slam from inside the house and moment later saw movement on the roof around the attic vent.

Several minutes later, a woman finally answered the and told the deputies the fugitive was inside the house.

Deputies entered the house with a K9 and began looking. The K9, Dan, was focused on a specific bedroom, where deputies found a closed attic hatch. Deputies heard noises coming from the attic, opened the hatch and made multiple announcements for the suspect to come out, or they would release the K9. After no response, K9 Dan, his handler and a DOC officer climbed into the attic.

K9 Dan immediately found the suspect buried under insulation. The suspect grabbed handfuls of insulation and threw them in K9 Dan's mouth and eyes, causing Dan to cough and vomit.

K9 Dan eventually latched on to the suspect's leg. The suspect was ordered to stop resisting, and K9 Dan was called back. The DOC officer was able to get the suspect into handcuffs.

"At this moment a deputy in the living room below noticed the ceiling above him buckling under the weight of the suspect and the DOC officer," the Pierce County Sheriff's Office said. "Our deputy threw couch cushions under the buckled area as the ceiling above him exploded and the suspect fell through the sheetrock in a giant cloud of insulation. The DOC officer fell partially through the hole but was able to pull himself back into the attic where K9 Dan and his handler were still located."

The 47-year-old suspect was found to be in possession of more than $3000 in cash and a small amount of heroin. He was not injured in the fall. He was booked into jail for the felony DOC warrant, as well as Assault of a Police Dog, Obstructing Law Enforcement and Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance.

K9 Dan continued to cough and vomit for several minutes after the arrest, but is doing better now according to the Sheriff's Office
