Driver charged with following too close in Highway 395 crash

Posted: Updated:
LOON LAKE, Wash. -

Update: Washington State Patrol investigators say a driver following too close led to a 3-vehicle crash at Highway 395 and Grote Rd. Saturday evening.

The crash happened around 7:15 p.m. Troopers say a silver 2003 Ford Taurus driven by 17-year-old Jon Peter Nelson was northbound on Highway 395, stopped and preparing to turn left onto Grote Road. The driver of a white 1995 Chevrolet GMT, identified as 34-year-old Bryan D Curtis of Spokane, was slowing and turning slightly onto the northbound shoulder.

A 2015 Chevrolet crew pickup driven by Sean K. Beuck of Chewelah was unable to stop and hit the GMT in the right rear, causing it to hit the Taurus. The Taurus rotated sideways and the GMT rolled on to its roof. The black pickup came to rest on top of the GMT, trapping Curtis, and his passenger, 46-year-old Thu B. Hall, inside.

Both Hall and Curtis were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Their conditions are not known at this time.

No one else was injured in the crash.

Troopers say Beuck has been charged with following too close. Drugs or alcohol were not factors in the crash according to WSP's report.

All those involved were wearing seat belts at the time.

Previous coverage:

Two people were injured in a 3-vehicle crash on Highway 395 just south of Loon Lake. However, the crash looked much more serious and when WSP Troopers arrived on scene they requested a LifeFlight helicopter for potentially life-threatening injuries.

Fortunately that did not end up being the case. They say the driver of a gray car was heading north on Highway 395 and slowed to turn left on Grove Road. A white truck behind that car also slowed, and then a black truck behind the white truck didn't notice in time, and ran over the white truck.

The only people injured were in the white truck, and they only suffered broken bones and bruises.

Troopers say charges are pending for the driver of the black truck, but right now the crash remains under investigation.
