Child molester beaten to death by fellow inmate in California prison

Posted: Updated:
WASCO, Calif. -

A convicted child molester was beaten to death by a fellow inmate at a California prison.

According to WFLA, 66-year-old Augustin Duran was attacked by 19-year-old Andres Ayon on Saturday night at Wasco State Prison in Kern County. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed the situation.

Officials say an alarm was sounded and inmates were instructed to get down as the attack began, but Ayon ignored guards and continued to strike Duran. The CDCR said Guards deployed a pepper spray grenade and Ayon finally complied before being taken to a holding cell.

Duran was transported to a local hospital, where he was declared dead just under 24 hours later. He was serving a 55-year to life sentence for lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 years old. Authorities say Duran had only been at Wasco State Prison for not even a week yet.

Ayon has been serving six years for second-degree robbery and use of a deadly weapon. He has been placed into the prison’s Administrative Segregation Unit, pending further investigation.
