Spokane deputies searching for driver who seriously injured man in crash

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE, Wash. -

Spokane County deputies are searching for a driver who they believe caused a crash on Market Thursday evening, then careened into a parking lot, striking a man and seriously injuring him.

Deputies first responded to the hit-and-run call around 5:40 p.m. in the 7200 block of N. Market St. Arriving deputies learned the driver of a red 1997 Ford Explorer cause the crash and immediately took off from the scene on foot.

Investigators say the crash happened when a Jeep Wrangler was headed east on Wilding. He was stopped at a stop sign at Market. When he started to turn northbound on Market, he noticed the Explorer speeding south. The driver of the Explorer attempted to swerve, but collided with the Jeep, causing the Jeep to spin. The Explorer continued across Market, went off the road and through a fence. It continued into a parking lot and hit man. The Explorer also hit a motorcycle parked next to him and narrowly missed the driver who was talking with the man hit.

The man who was struck sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. A passerby stopped to assist and quickly applied a tourniquet in an attempt to stop the severe bleeding from the man's leg, potentially saving his life.

Firefighters and medics arrived to help the victim and take him to an area hospital. As of Friday, the victim is listed in satisfactory condition.

The driver of the Explorer left the scene of the crash on foot. Deputies and a K9 unit searched the area, but could not find him.

Witnesses helped investigators identify 34-year-old Andrew D. Clifton as a possible suspect. Deputies continue to search for him.

Anyone with information/surveillance video regarding this injury collision, or witnessed it but have not been contact by law enforcement, is asked to call Corporal Jeff Welton at 509-477-3237.
