K9 Gunnar helps apprehend Spokane Valley burglary suspect

Posted: Updated:
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Monday was a successful day for K9 Gunner after a burglary suspect barricaded himself inside a Spokane Valley home.

It began in the 16000 block of E. 5th Ave. after a homeowner called 911 to report someone was in her house with her. She said she had come up from the basement to find dresser drawers in the master bedroom open and ransacked.

Deputies arrived and made sure the homeowner was OK before searching the house. They found the door to the master bedroom locked from the inside and noises coming from the room.

Deputy Jason Hunt and his partner K9 Gunnar were called to assist after the suspect refused to listen to commands to surrender. K9 Gunner breached the bedroom door and alerted deputies to the locked master bathroom door.

The bathroom door was breached and the suspect, 27-year-old Cody M. Sutton, was found attempting to hide on top of a vanity. K9 Gunner removed Sutton from the vanity and he began to cooperate with deputies.

Sutton told Deputy Hunt he is a meth/heroin user and had been awake for 4 days.  He heard the K9 warnings but he wanted to call his girlfriend and chose not to surrender, believing he would somehow get away.

Sutton was booked into the Spokane County Jail for residential burglary.
