9 out of 10 counties in 5th congressional district race see voter turnout above 50%

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Nine out of ten of the counties voting in the the fifth congressional district race are seeing early voter turnout of more than 50% each.

The average across the district is even higher - 62% of all available ballots have been turned in by 4 pm this afternoon, according to the WA Secretary of State's office.

Garfield County  leads in early-bird voters, with 76.5 percent of ballots already received with Columbia County right behind them with 75.4% of ballots already received.

Four counties have between 70 and 60 percent of ballots already returned: Pend Oreille - 69.2% Lincoln- 68% Ferry - 66.5% Spokane 61.9%.

Three counties say they have gotten over 50 percent of ballots returned: Stevens - 57.4% Asotin - 55% and Walla Walla - 53.8%.

Whitman County is the only county that will determine the fifth congressional district race between Brown and Rodgers with less than 50 percent of ballots returned so far sitting at 43.5%.

“This is highly unusual for a midterm,” Spokane County Auditor Vicky Dalton said.

The bigger the early turnout, the better the auditor's offices can count the ballots and in turn we will see more accurate results for the race.

Washington is a vote-by-mail state, and voters still have time today to have their ballot postmarked or placed in a secure drop box by 8 pm.

Check back for results on the race around 8:30 pm tonight.
