SALT LAKE CITY – Adam Morrison got his touches. J.P. Batista sunk his jump hooks. But the play-maker for Gonzaga on Saturday night was Sean Mallon. The junior from Spokane’s Ferris High School scored 15 points to help lift the Zags past the Indiana Hoosiers 90-80.
It just wasn’t Adam Morrison’s night. He shot 5-of-16 from the field, scoring just 14 points – 14 below his nation-leading average of 28. His frustration came to a boil in the second half with about 16:30 showing on the clock. He and Roderick Wilmont got into a scuffle under the basket and the referees hit both players with a technical foul.
But where Morrison fell short, the rest of the team stepped up. Batista led the team in scoring, connecting on 10-of-18 shots for 20 points. He also pulled down ten rebounds for yet another double-double. Freshman Jeremy Pargo also stepped up his game, scoring 10 points. Raivio scored 13 and Knight had 11.
The win over Indiana means Gonzaga will advance past the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. They will play UCLA on Thursday in Oakland (time to be determined).
