At least 79 dead in attack on mosque in BaghdadPosted: Updated:
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The number of dead from today's mosque attack in Baghdad continues to climb. Police now say at least 79 people were killed and more than 160 were wounded.
Police in Baghdad say the attack on a Shiite mosque in northern Baghdad was carried out by suicide attackers wearing women's robes. The preacher at the mosque says there were three attackers. He says one came through the women's security checkpoint and blew up first. Another raced into the courtyard and a third came to the preacher's office before detonating themselves. The mosque is affiliated with Iraq's main Shiite party.
The attack took place as worshippers left after Friday prayers. Earlier in the day, officials warned people in Baghdad to avoid crowds near mosques and markets because of a car bomb threat.
