Immigration rallies underway in Washington state

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE  - Organizers of today's immigration march in Seattle expect about 25-thousand to march and rally at the downtown Federal Building. Ricardo Ortega of the "Committee for General Amnesty and Social Justice" says many people are leaving work and students are leaving classes to take part.

He says they hope to pressure Congress to reform immigration law to reunite families, clear the way for obtaining U-S citizenship and create more opportunities for foreign workers. He says they hear some complaints from people who say undocumented immigrants don't pay taxes and take jobs from U-S citizens. Ortega says undocumented immigrants pay more in taxes than they take and perform dangerous low-wage jobs that nobody else will do.

Rallies are also taking place in Tri-Cities and Yakima.  Continue watching KHQ Right Now for LIVE streaming coverage of the day's events.

SPOKANE, Wash. - From the outside, the Repeat Boutique looks like a lot of other thrift shops in Spokane.  Inside, some might describe the stuff for sale as old, used, discarded garbage -- but store manager CJ Curtis sees its potential. And just like the goods in her shop, CJ is on her way to a new life, one far from the one she once lived.

SPOKANE, Wash. - "He told me to pull over, and my jaw just dropped," a Spokane woman, who says a fake police officer tried to pull her over, doesn't want to be named. In fear, this could happen again. "It really scared me and kind of threw me off that night. I don't even want to drive by myself anymore," she said. She tells me that she was driving around North Spokane at night on her way home from work.
