President says 6,000 National Guard members to be assigned to borderPosted: Updated:
WHITE HOUSE (AP) - Saying the US hasn't been in control of its borders for decades, President Bush says up to 6,000 National Guard members will be deployed to the border with Mexico.
Bush says the number of Border Patrol officers will be increased by 6,000 officers by the end of 2008. He says that will mean the Border Patrol would be doubled during his presidency. In a prime-time address, Bush also called for an increase in the use of security technology, including motion sensors and infrared cameras to deter illegal crossings. The president also proposed a temporary worker program that would create "a legal path for foreign workers to enter out country in an orderly way." He also called for employers "to account for the workers they hire" and the creation of a new high-tech identification cards for every legal foreign worker.
