Steelers quarterback injured in motorcycle accident

Posted: Updated:

PITTSBURGH - Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is undergoing surgery after being hospitalized in serious but stable condition following a motorcycle accident. One witness says the Super Bowl-winning quarterback was disoriented and bleeding before he was taken from the scene by an ambulance after his bike collided with a car at a downtown Pittsburgh intersection.

Last year, Steelers coach Bill Cowher warned his prized quarterback about the dangers of riding a motorcycle after Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow Junior tore up knee ligaments in a bike accident and missed an entire season. But the lecture apparently failed to hit home. Ben Roethlisberger.

The chief of trauma at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh says the Steelers' QB is in serious but stable condition. The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he likes to ride without a helmet, but it's not known if he was doing so at the time of his collision with a car at an intersection on the fringe of downtown Pittsburgh. Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season in only his second year of N-F-L action.
