Fires burn along Interstate 90Posted: Updated:
At about 10:50 this morning units from the Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to numerous grass fires along a half-mile stretch of eastbound I-90 about 2 miles east of the Liberty Lake exit.
Firefighters found 6 different small fires on the shoulder. Seventeen firefighters in 5 rigs fought the fires and had them under control in about 30 minutes. The causes of these fires are under investigation, however due the fact that they are all separate they are considered suspicious, fire officials said. They said it appears that burning objects were thrown from a passing vehicle traveling along the freeway.
There were no other fires reported along I-90 into Idaho. There was no dollar loss and no structures were threatened.
Fire officials say fires along the freeways are dangerous due to the fact smoke can drift across the roadway and cause reduced visibility. Drivers are reminded to slow done when encountering smoke on the roadway. The smoke from today's fires did not cross the roadway; however there was one minor accident in the fire area, officials said.
