World Cup Crash: Car slams into barrier, injuring 21Posted: Updated:
BERLIN (AP) - Police in Germany say more than 20 people were hurt when a car drove through a barrier blocking off Berlin's main World Cup public viewing area.
Police say ten people were taken to hospitals, and eleven others were treated at the scene.
Police have detained the driver and a passenger in the car. They're investigating whether the crash was deliberate.
The car crashed through a concrete barrier blocking off the stretch of main road where World Cup games are shown on big screens to hundreds of thousands of fans. It drove right up to the area's main stage, directly before the landmark Brandenburg Gate, before it was stopped.
One official says it was "very lucky" that few people were on the Fan Mile today because there were no matches. During the games, as many as 700-thousand people have packed the mile-long area.
