More than 40 dead in Baghdad RampagePosted: Updated:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - At least 41 Sunni Arabs have been assassinated by Shiite gunmen rampaging through western Baghdad.
Iraqi police say the dramatic escalation in sectarian violence is in retaliation for last night's bombing of a Shiite mosque in the Jihad neighborhood. Two people were killed and nine were wounded in that attack.
Police and witnesses say gunmen loaded into four cars drove into the neighborhood this morning, stopping cars and demanding identification. Those with cards indicating Sunni names were killed. Their bodies were then dumped on streets throughout the neighborhood.
U-S and Iraqi forces have sealed off the area. Witnesses say American forces are using loudspeakers to announce a two-day curfew.
