Hundreds of Americans to be escorted from LebanonPosted: Updated:
BEIRUT, Lebanon - A commercial cruise ship escorted by a U-S destroyer will be on duty tomorrow to take hundreds of Americans away from the fighting in Lebanon.
The U.S. military says Super Stallion military choppers are also on duty, carrying 64 Americans out of the U.S. embassy compound in Beirut. More military flights are scheduled for tomorrow to get U.S. citizens to Cyprus.
There are some 25,000 Americans in Lebanon. The U.S. Embassy has already advised anyone who wants to leave that they can carry one bag each, weighing no more than 30 pounds.
Over six days of fighting with Hezbollah militants, Israel has blockaded Lebanon. But the Israeli army seems to be letting through evacuation ships filled with French and Italian evacuees.
