First Lady praises McGavick at Bellevue fundraiserPosted: Updated:
BELLEVUE, Wash. - Laura Bush praised Mike McGavick at a fund-raiser Wednesday morning in Bellevue for the Republican Senate challenger.
She told about 500 supporters that his ability to turn around Safeco as C-E-O demonstrated his leadership ability. She said he would embody values of civility and cooperation in the Senate. But she got the biggest applause when she said McGavick would cut taxes and support the line-item veto so the president could cut wasteful spending.
Laura Bush also is speaking to about 400 people at a fund-raising luncheon for McGavick in Kennewick at the Three Rivers Convention Center. The campaign says the visit from the first lady highlights the importance of McGavick's race against incumbent Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell.
