Gonzaga knocks off No. 2 North Carolina at Madison Square Garden
NEW YORK - The Gonzaga Bulldogs used a stingy defense and team play on offense to send the No. 2 North Carolina Tarheels packing. They beat UNC 82-74 at Madison Square Garden in the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Gonzaga had four players in double figures. Derek Raivio led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Josh Heytvelt scored 19. Jeremy Pargo went 6-for-11 for 16 points, and freshman Matt Bouldin scored 14.
As a team, the Zags shot beter than 52 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Tarheels struggled offensively after the first part of the first half, shooting a dismal 37 percent from the field. Brandon Wright led all scorers with 23. Ty Lawson was held to 11 points.
The Zags got off to a slow start at the Garden, trailing 10-0 in the early minutes of the game. Gonzaga slowly chipped away at the Tarheels lead however, and went into halftime with a slim lead. The Bulldogs led by as much as 16 in the second half, but UNC fought back, coming to within 4 before Gonzaga stormed back to shut the door on a comeback.
Gonzaga will now face Butler in the NIT Season Tip-Off final on Friday.
