MOSCOW, Idaho - The University of Idaho introduced Washington State defensive coordinator Robb Akey as head coach of the Vandals at a news conference in Moscow.
Akey replaces Dennis Erickson, who shook up the colelge football world by accpeting the head coaching job at the University of Arizona.
Akey has been with the Cougars since 1998. Prior to working in Pullman, Akey worked at Northern Arizona and at his alma mater Weber State.
The leading candidate was believed to have been Montana State coach Mike Kramer. Kramer, however, withdrew from consideration, leaving the Vandals to continue their search. Other names floated during the process included ex-Idaho coach John L. Smith, who was fired from Michigan State.
The Spokesman Review reports San Diego coach Jim Harbaugh was on Idaho's list up until yesterday. Harbaugh, a former NFL quarterback with several teams, took the head coaching job at Stanford instead.
