Saddam Hussein has been executed

Posted: Updated:

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Arab media including Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya and the US-financed Al-Hurrah, are reporting that Saddam Hussein has been executed. There has been no confirmation from the Iraqi government. Iraq is on a state of high alert to curb any post-execution violence.

An adviser to Iraq's Prime Minster says the time was agreed upon during a meeting between US and Iraqi officials. Also to be hanged at the same time were Saddam's half-brothers Barzan Ibrahim and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, the former chief justice of the Revolutionary Court.

Official witnesses gathered in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone Friday night hours before the execution.

Before the execution, many in Iraq sauid they'd be be glad to see Saddam's execution carried out. In a Friday sermon, a preacher at a mosque in the Shiite holy city of Najaf said the execution is "God's gift to Iraqis."

A glance at Saddam Hussein through the years:
July 1979 - Took over as president of Iraq
July 1982 - He kills more than one-hundred Shiite muslims
March 1988 - He's accused of gassing more than 5000 Kurds
August 1990 - He invades Kuwait beginning the first Gulf War
December 2003 - He's found hiding underground in Tikrit.

SPOKANE, Wash. - Initiative-1639 has been the root of controversy ever since supporters began asking for signatures. It became even more complicated when the Washington Supreme Court overturned a Thurston County judges decision after the judge initially threw out over 300,000 signatures saying the petition didn't follow election law claiming it was unreadable.
