COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Dozens of people in Kootenai County have been sickened by a persistent stomach flu outbreak.
Randi Lustig, epidemiology manager at Panhandle Health District, says "It is circulating in our community, and it is very hard to avoid." In the last five months, Lustig says the county has seen outbreaks in five places.
Gary Liesner, director of nursing at LaCrosse Health and Rehabilitation Center in Coeur d'Alene, where 12 residents recently caught the flu, said the situation is as bad as it's been in recent memory. He says screening incoming patients for symptoms hasn't been effective, given the one- to two-day lag time between infection and when the symptoms start emerging.
