SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga Bulldogs' 50-game home winning streak, the longest in the nation, is over. Santa Clara beat the Zags 84 to 73 Monday in Spokane to take over sole possession of first place in the West Coast Conference.
The Bulldogs played without star forward Josh Heytvelt, who was arrested on Saturday for drug possession and suspended from the team. The win gave Santa Clara a 9 and 2 WCC record and jumped the Broncos ahead of the Zags in the conference standings.
The Zags dropped to 8 and 3 in league play. It was the first loss in 39 games in the 3-year-old McCarthey Athletic Center for Gonzaga.
Santa Clara ended a 13-game losing streak against Gonzaga. Scott Dougherty had 23 points for the Broncos, while Derek Raivio led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Gonzaga's Jeremy Pargo scored 20 points.
