SPOKANE, Wash. - On "Selection Sunday" 65 basketball teams will be selected to compete in the NCAA tournament. 31 teams have already earned automatic bids by winning their conference tournaments, including the Zags who won the WCC.
An NCAA committee will choose 34 more teams to participate. The Cougars will come out of this pool. These teams usually come from powerhouse conferences like the ACC, Big East, SEC, and Big Ten. Some teams won't even know they've made it to the tournament until they see it on television during the selection show.
After teams are selected, seeding begins. The committee looks at team records, strength in schedules, ratings-percentage indexes, and overall performance to decide their seeding in the four regions. This ensures that tourney match-ups are fair.
Finally, the committee selects what teams will play in which cities. For example, Spokane is hosting the first and second rounds on March 16-18. Unfortunately, those tickets are completely sold out. You can still buy them, but it's very pricey.
