SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga assistant basketball coach Bill Grier is leaving the program to become head coach at West Coast Conference rival University of San Diego.
For years, Grier has been the presumed heir apparent to head coach Mark Few. Instead, he will be replaced on the Gonzaga staff by former Utah and Eastern Washington head coach Ray Giacoletti.
It is the first major addition to the remarkably stable Gonzaga staff in years.
Grier became a Gonzaga assistant in 1992. He has long been considered Few's heir apparent. He replaces Brad Holland at San Diego.
Few says he plans to hire Giacoletti, who resigned under pressure at Utah after two consecutive losing seasons.
