WSP trooper named top trooper in North America

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.- A Washington State Patrol trooper has been named the top trooper in North America. Kelly Kalmbach, a six-year W-S-P veteran, was given the honor last week by the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

The 48-year-old trooper who lives in Kennewick hopes to return to duty after recovering from five gunshot wounds she suffered in a shootout in Pierce County last June. She spent eight days in the hospital recovering from bullet wounds to her left arm, right thigh and knee and left calf.

Kalmbach earlier had been named the association's Western Region Trooper of the Year for her actions after stopping a suspected drunken driver while on patrol in Pierce County last summer.

State Patrol Chief John Batiste calls Kalmbach an excellent trooper and says it was no surprise that she was named the nation's top trooper.

The Trooper of the Year award is given by the I-A-C-P after nominations from state-level police agencies in the U-S, two Canadian provinces and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.Troopers are nominated by their state agencies, followed by review at the regional level, where four finalists are selected for the North American honor.
