4th anniversary of the fall of BaghdadPosted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, D.C.-U-S military spokesman is praising the peaceful nature of today's demonstration in Iraq. Colonel Steven Boylan says Iraqis couldn't have done such a thing four years ago, under Saddam Hussein's regime. Tens of thousands of Iraqis marched in the Shiite holy cities of Kufa and Nujaf to mark the fourth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad. Boylan says Iraqis now have the right to assemble and the right to free speech. He says that's progress any way you look at it. A senior official in al-Sadr's organization called the rally a "call for liberation." He says he hopes that by next year's anniversary, Iraq will be independent and liberated with full sovereignty.
