Tacoma Narrows bridge part stuck in Spokane for another day

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash.- WSDOT issued an oversize load permit today to the hauler who will transport a 100-ton expansion joint for the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge from Spokane to the Gig Harbor.

A final safety inspection will need to be completed before the hauler can be cleared to begin the cross-state trip.  Once it's on the move, the hauler expects to travel about 70 miles per night to complete the 300-plus-mile trip.

A new hauler was hired to move the giant expansion joint after the previous hauler was unsuccessful in distributing the load to meet state standards for weight-to-axle ratio.

The reconfigure load is 200 feet long, the length of five semi-trailers. The expansion joint, truck and its equipment weigh about 420,000 pounds.
