Fired UW coach Daugherty to take over at WSU

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - A source told The Associated Press Thursday that fired University of Washington women's basketball coach June Daugherty will be the next Washington State women's coach.

WSU athletic officials scheduled a Friday news conference in Pullman to announce Daugherty's hiring to take over the downtrodden Cougars program.

Fifty-year-old Daugherty will replace Sherri Murrell, who resigned April 5 after compiling a 27-114 record in her five years as coach. Murrell was 8-and-82 in Pac-10 play.

Despite coaching Washington to the NCAA tournament the past two seasons and in six of her 11 years with the Huskies, Daugherty was dismissed by Washington athletic director Todd Turner on March 18.
