CAIRO, Egypt-A top Taliban commander says Osama bin Laden was behind a February attack outside a U.S. military base in Afghanistan when Vice President Cheney was visiting. The Taliban's main military commander in southern Afghanistan says bin Laden planned and supervised the attack that killed more than 20 people.
He doesn't say how he knows that bin Laden planned the attack, but says the al-Qaida leader has "planned operations in both Iraq and Afghanistan." And he insists bin Laden is alive and well.
The Taliban commander made the comments in an interview aired today on Al-Jazeera. The bombing at the bit U-S base in Bagram killed about 20 Afghan civilians, a U.S. soldier a U.S. contractor and a South Korean soldier. The Taliban has claimed Cheney was the target.
