Mariners add Davis, delete Rowland-Smith from 25-man roster

Posted: Updated:

SEATTLE, WA - With the future of reliever Julio Mateo with the Seattle Mariners up in the air, the team activated newly acquired reliever Jason Davis and optioned left-hander Ryan Rowland-Smith to Triple-A Tacoma.

The Mariners traded for Davis with Cleveland on Sunday for a player to be named.

The 27-year-old Davis, a right-hander, joined the team in time for their series opener in Seattle with the Los Angeles Angels tonight. He was immediately added to the Mariners' 25-man roster and Rowland-Smith was subtracted.

The 29-year-old Mateo was a fixture in the Mariners' bullpen the past five seasons, but he was arrested by New York police on May 6th on a charge of third-degree assault following a dispute with his wife at a hotel in Manhattan.

The Mariners suspended Mateo 10 days without pay, a suspension that will cost him $54,645 of his $1 (m) million salary this season. The players association may challenge the suspension. Mateo has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

To make room on its 40-man major league roster for Davis, Seattle transferred veteran left-hander Arthur Rhodes to the 60-day disabled list. Rhodes had season-ending ligament replacement surgery on his elbow this month.
