Mariners open interleague play vs. Padres at SafecoPosted: Updated:
Seattle, WA - The Mariners open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres Friday night at 7:05 in the start of interleague play. The Mariners will start Miguel Batista against the Padres' Chris Young. Thursday night the Mariners fell three games behind the Angels in the American League West and dropped to .500 with a 7-3 loss to Los Angeles ace Bartolo Colon at Safeco Field.
While the 33-year-old Colon improved his record to 5-0, Vladimir Guerrero homered and had three RBIs as the Angels beat the Mariners for the second straight night. After holding the New York Yankees scoreless over eight innings in his previous start, Mariners starter Jarrod Washburn suffered the loss.
Washburn dropped to 3-4, allowing season highs of six runs and eight hits in six innings, with his ERA climbing from 2.64 to 3.35. Adrian Beltre and Yuniesky Betancourt each went 3-4, Ben Broussard hit his third homer of the season and Ichiro Suzuki was 2-5 to raise his batting average to .320 for the Mariners.
But after Suzuki got his ninth hit in three games in the seventh inning, he was caught stealing to end his league record streak of 45 consecutive successful steals. He wound up five short of Vince Coleman's major league record.
