Mariners open final series of road trip

Posted: Updated:

HOUSTON - After dropping the final game of a series to the Chicago Cubs, the Seattle Mariners will open the final series of a 10-game road trip Friday in Houston.

Following Friday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs at Wrigley Field, the Mariners will start 21-year-old right-hander Felix Hernandez against Astros left-hander Wandy Rodriguez. Hernandez has a 3-3 record, with a 4.41 ERA, while Rodriguez is 3-6, with a 4.52 ERA.

Houston is a dozen games under .500 at 27 and 39, and has lost two games in a row.

Thursday in Chicago, the Mariners got six good innings from veteran right-hander Jeff Weaver, but their bullpen failed them after he left the game.

Rookie Brandon Morrow suffered his first major league loss in four decisions when he couldn't hold a 4 to 3 lead in the eighth inning. Morrow walked the first two Cubs he faced in the eighth, Koyle Hill sacrificed them to second and third and, Cesar Izturis delivered a two-run double.

It was the Mariners' second straight loss in Chicago and left them with a 5-2 record on their road trip.

With a 35-28 record, they're now five games back of the first-place Los Angeles Angels and in a virtual tie with Oakland for second place in the American League West.

SPOKANE, Wash. - From the outside, the Repeat Boutique looks like a lot of other thrift shops in Spokane.  Inside, some might describe the stuff for sale as old, used, discarded garbage -- but store manager CJ Curtis sees its potential. And just like the goods in her shop, CJ is on her way to a new life, one far from the one she once lived.
