Woman and child hurt in collision after fleeing traffic stop

Posted: Updated:

SPOKANE, Wash. - Police are now releasing the name of a 24-year old woman injured during an accident last night. Janean R. Swan remains in critical condition. A child riding in Swans car was also injured in the accident, but police say they should be released from the hospital today. Police say Swan drove away from a traffic stop at high speed and colliding with other vehicles near the intersection of Market Street and Wellesley.

Spokane Police Officers stopped the Swan after seeing car parts dragging beneath the vehicle and smoke coming from the engine compartment.  Firefighters were called but later cancelled when Officers raised the hood and realized the smoke was coming from a mechanical problem rather than a fire.

Officers learned during the traffic stop that the woman was wanted for Felony Malicious Mischief.  When told she was under arrest, the woman refused to get out of the car and accelerated northbound on Market St. at high speed with the vehicle's hood still raised.

Spokane Police initiated a pursuit but terminated it for safety reasons.  They found the collision moments later. Spokane Police Department Traffic Investigators were expected to gather evidence at the scene for several hours.
