Diabetes deaths not decreasing for women

Posted: Updated:

Diabetes death rates have declined over the past 30 years but only in men.  A survey of over 20,000 people found the death rates among men with diabetes decreased over 40% from 1971 to 2000.

However, the researchers did not find a decrease in death among women with diabetes from heart attack or any cause.  Experts say diabetes treaments appear to work. Now they need to figure out why they're not as effective in women.

Additional Information:

  • Researchers used data from the NHANES survey. This survey relied on self-reported cases of diabetes, which is a limitation of this study
  •  The death rate from any cause among men with diabetes went from 42.6 annual deaths per 1000 persons to 24.4 deaths per 1000 persons.
  • The study did not look at reasons behind the sex differences.
